Sort It Syllable Division Game Card Deck

Solidify students' multisyllable word decoding and understanding of syllable division patterns with this Sort-It Game! Whether you are working to develop their phonics knowledge or using these words to enhance vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, or writing instruction – this easy-to-play game ensures students get the review they need with the level of fun they enjoy! Play with students or have them play with their peers to keep them occupied while you work with other students or groups.

How we use them:

This game can be played with up to seven players. Have each player pick a “team” (i.e., a syllable division type). Set the timer for three minutes. Flip over the word cards and begin sorting them based on their division pattern. The person/team with the most cards at the end wins! You can use all seven division patterns or just the ones that you’ve already introduced.

In addition to dividing, decoding, and sorting the words as a part of the game, you can…

• Set a timer & have students read as many words in one minute as possible so that you can measure their word-level reading fluency
• Have students pull a word to define so that you can target vocabulary skills
• Have students pull words to use in sentences so that you can target vocabulary and writing skills

• 78 game cards so that you have a variety of prompts to practice dividing and decoding words with the following Syllable Division Patterns –
  • Rabbit = VC/CV
  • Reptile = VCE Division
  • Hornet = R-Controlled Division
  • Tiger = V/CV
  • Camel = VC/V
  • Lion = V/V Division
  • Turtle = CLE Division
• We use an animal that follows the division pattern (i.e., Rabbit follows the VC/CV division pattern) so that students have a memorable way to remember and categorize their syllable division rules.
• Each 2.5” x 3.5” card is printed on heavy-duty cardstock to allow for long-term and repeated use
